ADSL Domain Names Hosting Email Dial-up Accounting FTP General

What Is ADSL?
ADSL is a technology that uses the existing copper wired telephone networks. ADSL uses a range of frequencies over an existing telephone line to deliver much higher speeds than your standard 56k modem (between 10 and 40 times faster). It is also possible to use your phone while online.

Is ADSL Broadband?
Broadband is a general term for quick Internet access and ADSL is a type of broadband service.

What does ADSL stand for?
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (Asymmetric because the upload and download speeds differ).

Who offers ADSL?
Many ISPs offer an ADSL service, including Skymarket, which concentrates on offering business quality ADSL for companies and individuals.

What ADSL speeds does Skymarket offer?
We offer speeds of 512 kb/s (50:1 contention ratio) for home users and 512 kb/s, 1Mb/s and 2Mb/s (all 20:1 contention) for business/power users. See here for more details.

What does contention ratio mean?

At a 50:1 contention potentially 49 other people will be using your line to the exchange at the same time as you, thus slowing your connection speed considerably (512 divided by 50 = 10.24). In reality, you would not expect more than a handful of other users to be contending for the line in this way at any given moment. Reducing the contention rate on the line is a way of guaranteeing that a smaller number of users could potentially use your line, and thus slow down your connection speeds.

How does it work?
The service uses your existing telephone line. It splits the signal into two channels, one for voice communications and the other for the high-speed data connection. It makes use of a frequency range not used in normal voice communications:
Voice : 0 - 20 kHz
Data : 25.875 kHz - 1.104 MHz

What can I do with it?
Anything you already do with your 56k connection, just much faster. However, you can do things that just wouldn't be viable on a dial-up connection:
Play games without jerky screen problems.
- Multitask - download a file, browse the web, check email at the same time, all still much quicker than using a dial-up connection.
- Watch high quality streaming media on your PC such as music videos, movie trailers or concerts.

How long does it take to install ADSL?
If ADSL is available for your location (check here) then normal installation is about 10 working days from us receiving the order.

What do I need in order to have ADSL installed?
1. ADSL must be available for your location (check here).
2. A normal (analogue) phone line from BT.
3. An ADSL Modem or Router.
4. A microfilter, to filter out the electronic noise on the line when making phone calls. Skymarket can supply all the necessary equipment, along with Wireless Network capabilities for people not wanting to be connected physically to the ADSL line.

Do I still have to pay BT line rental if I get ADSL?
Yes. BT's telephone billing (line rental and call charges) are unrelated to your ADSL. You will however not have to make any calls to the Internet, as the ADSL is an always-on connection.

I'm not a BT customer - Can I have ADSL?
Not unless you live in areas where competitors to BT are operating. LLU (Local Loop Unbundling) will hopefully mean that ISP's can offer you the service and will allow BT to be bypassed, but this is in its early stages so expect to wait a while.

I have a Mac - Can I use ADSL?
Yes. All Skymarket ADSL hardware supports Mac users. If you decide to supply your own hardware you will need to check with your supplier.

I have ISDN lines, can I have ADSL?
ADSL can’t be installed on ISDN lines, so either you need a separate new (analogue) phone line or for the ISDN to be converted back to an analogue service.

Can I resell Skymarket ADSL?
Yes, We offer generous discounts to partners. If you would like more information, please call 0845 475 2200 or click here.

Question not Answered?
If you cannot find an answer to your question in our FAQ, then please follow this link and then access the "Questions and Answers" section of ADSLGuide.org, a very good resource for ADSL issues.

How do I choose a domain name for my Web site?
You want to select a name that will be easy for your customers or potential customers to remember. The obvious choice would be to use your business name, such as www.thexyz-company.com. But if your company is named The XYZ Company, you might want to try abbreviating the domain name for simplicity - such as www.xyz.com.

Does Skymarket offer a monthly fee for unlimited access via a dial-up account?
We don’t offer ‘unlimited use’ for a monthly fee, as to make any profit from it the company would have to run severely over-subscribed and we concentrate on offering quality services with low contention ratios. Can I have a private ftp space?
We do not sell FTP space. However if you have an item that you want users to download then you can place these in your space. For example if you wanted to place a shareware archive in your space then you would create a zip, hqx or exe file in your docs directory structure and create a link to it with a URL such as http://www.yourcompany.co.uk/file.zip.
Private FTP space isn't a standard product as it is hard to monitor and tends to use lots of bandwidth, but it can be organised if required, please contact sales@skymarket.co.uk for more information. An alternative way for your viewers to download files from your site is for you to create the files and place them in your web directory. For example if you wanted to place a shareware archive in your space then you would create a zip, hqx or exe file in your docs directory structure and create a link to it with a URL such as http://www.yourcompany.co.uk/file.zip.

I think someone has my password details what do I do?
If you think that your password has been compromised you should contact our support team during normal support hours. If you have asked for telnet access to the server your site is running on, you can change your password using the passwd command. Either way, no charge is made for changing passwords.

Can I run CGI scripts?
If your script is written in Perl then the first line of the script must be: #!/usr/bin/perl You must save the file in UNIX format. If the file is saved in DOS format then there will be an extra (Control M or ^M) at the end of the line. Macintosh format text files appear as single line to UNIX. These will cause a 500: Server error message. If you want to place programs written in C, C++ or any language apart from Perl, in your cgi-bin directory, then the support team examine the code and compile it for you. This may be chargeable and will not be portable between servers. You must not, except with the explicit agreement of the support team place a binary, executable file in your web space. You should try to debug your scripts locally. Versions of perl exist for most flavours of UNIX, DOS and MacOS. Although the DOS and MacOS versions may not show up all possible errors, they will tell you if any glaring syntactical errors have been made.

This is useful if, for example, you have one website and 4 domains and you want all visitors to be directed to the same place.. There are 2 types of Web Forwarding, Cloaked and Un-Cloaked. A cloaked forwarding retains the URL entered, whereas uncloaked displays the new one.
